What washer and dryer repairs cost

• Gas or carbon monoxide. If you smell gas, leave right away and call 911 from outside, then your gas utility.¹ If a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, get everyone outside to fresh air and call 911.²
• Smoke or sparks. If a washer or dryer is smoking or sparking, stop using it until it's repaired.³
• A fire. Get out, go to your outside meeting place and call the fire department from there.⁴

The pump, the belt and the coupling are priced as parts on their own. A washer that won't drain or won't spin can have other causes, and only the technician's diagnosis says which part it is.

The ranges price an electric dryer's heating element and a gas dryer's igniter separately, so tell the company which kind you have when you call.

If clothes are still damp at the end of a normal cycle, or drying takes longer than it used to, the lint screen or the exhaust duct may be blocked. Lint that builds up in the dryer or the duct can block the air, overheat the dryer and start a fire. The CPSC says to clean the lint screen before or after every load, clean the vent and exhaust duct now and then, and check that air comes out of the outside vent while the dryer runs.¹⁹ The U.S. Fire Administration says to have a dryer installed and serviced by a professional.²⁰

• A whole washer or dryer repair by gas or electric. The published ranges split by fuel only for the dryer's heating parts above.
• Prices by symptom or by brand. Cost guides price these repairs by appliance and by part, so the ranges aren't a diagnosis.
• Emergency and after-hours visits. Only one cost guide prices them. Ask the company what it adds for an evening or weekend visit.
• One company's diagnosis fee. A single company's price isn't a national range.

• Ask what the service call fee is and whether it counts toward the repair.
• Ask for a written estimate before the work starts. Some states require one, and Your right to a written estimate before an appliance repair lists them.
