The figures here are published national ranges from cost guides. They aren't quotes. Each one is a range at least two independent cost guides agree on. Use them to check a price, then ask appliance repair companies near you for an estimate.

The service call

The service call fee typically covers the trip, the diagnosis and the first hour of work.¹ Before the technician comes, ask what the fee is and whether it counts toward the repair.

Gas or electric

The ranges that publish split by fuel only for the part that heats. The tables above give a dryer's and an oven's electric element and gas igniter separately, and a gas range or cooktop on its own. For a whole repair, the figures by fuel come from one cost guide, so we don't give them.

Prices we don't give

Emergency and after-hours visits. Only one cost guide prices them. Ask the company what it adds for an evening or weekend visit.
One company's fees. A single company's price isn't a national range.
Prices by symptom. Cost guides price repairs by appliance and by part, not by what the appliance is doing, so none of these ranges is a diagnosis.
Prices by brand.
Some single parts and jobs. A freezer's compressor, a refrigerator's evaporator fan motor, a new ice maker inside a refrigerator and an electric range repair are each priced by only one cost guide.

Before you book

If an appliance gave anyone a shock, don't touch it. Turn off its power at the circuit breaker and have an electrician check it.³⁷
Ask for a written estimate before the work starts. Some states require one, and Your right to a written estimate before an appliance repair lists them.
Ask which license or registration the company holds, where your state or city has one. How to check an appliance repair company has each state's rule.
